«Metrohmsoro»: A Partnership Relying on Shared Values
In Spain, Metrohm instruments are distributed not by our own sales organizations, but by third-party distributors: Massó in Catalonia and the Balearic islands and Gomensoro in the rest of Spain. During my visits at our third-party distributors, it has become more and more clear to me that sharing one philosophy is the basis of our cooperation with these distributors. Gomensoro in Madrid doesn’t like giving tasks out of their hands, for example—much like Metrohm: only when you do things yourself can you be sure that the result will live up to your standards. Iván Portal, Gomensoro’s sales rep in the Seville region, told me a story that shows that the like-mindedness of the two companies is perceived by customers too: for some of Iván’s customers, Gomensoro and Metrohm stand for the same things so much that they got confused and fused the company names into one: Metrohmsoro.
Talking to the staff responsible for Metrohm at Gomensoro’s headquarters in Madrid, I learned a lot about the success of Gomensoro why the two companies work so well together—and have been doing so for 40 years. Like Metrohm International Headquarters, Gomensoro’s employees stay loyal to the company for a very long time. In the application lab, for example, lab manager Javier has been with Gomensoro for 14 years, his colleagues Sandra, María, and Miguel have been with the company for 10 years, 6 years, and 20 years respectively.
The laboratory team insists on the importance of having a good relationship amongst each other and with Metrohm Headquarters as well. «We have drinks together once in a while. It’s important to know what’s going on in you colleagues personal life», says Sandra. «We’re a family», adds Javier. And the final ingredient for working successfully according to Miguel: «We’re happy with our work!»
The four scientists enjoy that their job is different every day, and they have a lot of freedom to decide where it’s going. «In Spain, it’s very unusual to do research at a private company. But we’re able to do research here every day», says Miguel. María’s favorite part of the job is being able to get direct feedback from our customers and working together with them: «We spend a lot of time with our customers and some of them have become friends.» «Having such friendly customers», adds Sandra, «makes visits, installations, and working together with the customers in general much easier for us!»
Cristóbal, product manager service and service manager has been part of the Gomensoro team for more than 20 years and still enjoys his job: «I’m doing what I like, and as long as this is the case, I don’t feel like I’m working.» What he likes about his job? «We have many customers who do amazing things. I learn a lot about where things come from and how they are made while doing my job. Also, I meet a lot of amazing people and having the opportunity to help them do their work gives me great satisfaction.»
The customers’ perspective
Iván Portal, sales rep for the Seville region, took me to his customers at Atlantic Copper in Huelva, an hour’s drive from Seville. The company’s most important product are cathodes from high-purity copper, next to several valuable byproducts from their production, e.g., sulfuric acid. «They’re great-they’re not just customers, they’re like friends», says Iván about his contacts at Atlantic Copper.
The relationship between Atlantic Copper and Gomensoro dates 40 years back, when Atlantic Copper bought its first instrument from our Spanish distributor: a polarograph. According to Coral Portilla, who has been working at Atlantic Copper for about 20 years and is today the head of the chemistry division, after all this time and personnel coming and going on both sides, two things have remained constant: «Even though Metrohm instruments have changed, they have kept their high quality level. Equally, we’ve had a great relationship with the sales and service personnel from Gomensoro at all times. We know that we can trust them. What is also important,» she adds, «is that the sales and service people responsible for us stay responsible for us for a long time. This allows us to build a strong relationship with them.» It was Coral’s father, by the way, who started the cooperation with Gomensoro-he worked at Atlantic Copper for 40 years.
In the chemical division of Atlantic Copper, Metrohm titrators and a polarography are used for chemical analyses, mainly of process samples. Laboratory manager José Antonio Maldonado confirms his colleague’s experiences: «The quality of the instruments is very high», he says. «But honestly, I’ve never worked with anything else-when I joined 7 years ago, the lab was already equipped with Metrohm. The service is very good as well. Whenever we have a problem, we get help very quickly. And when we can’t solve it here, we’re always welcome at Gomensoro in Madrid where we can run further tests on our samples.»
