Muratie: Wines With History

The area surrounding Cape Town is famous for its wines. The Muratie Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, just about 50 kilometers from Cape Town, is one of the oldest estates in the Cape area and looks back at over 300 years of history. The history and winemaking tradition are kept alive at Muratie. But tradition in winemaking meets forward-thinking in social and environmental matters at the estate. In our video, winemaker Rijk Melck talks about the history of the estate and giving back to nature and society.

Combine two good things to make a great thing: Muratie’s wine and chocolate pairing

What brought Leanne of Metrohm South Africa and me to Muratie Wine Estate was an old Metrohm pH meter that is on display here. And the wine and chocolate pairing they offer. The latter alone makes a visit at Muratie worthwhile!

But when we talked to Rijk Melck, winemaker and owner of the estate, we learned that there was so much more to know about the Muratie Estate than «just» the wines. Listen to Rijk Melck talk about the winemaking, environmental, and social philosophy and how it impacts the local community.

Muratie’s history and philosophy is the stuff of legends. More importantly, the passion to preserve the rich heritage for posterity is commendable. One legend deserves another… Just as well that they have the Metrohm E520 pH Meter with the analog readout on a graduated scale, a strikingly unconventional instrument for the present generation. For sheer longevity, both Muratie and Metrohm are right on top of the charts 🙂
